MADRID - dogs, cats, hamsters, ducks and even pigs have marched on Monday, January 17, in English churches to be blessed on the occasion of St. Anthony, the patron saint of animals.
" God bless this animal and that Saint-Antoine protects him from all evil ," recited the father Juan Villar, the priest of the Church of Saint Anthony of Madrid, by sprinkling holy water animals supplied by their owners, even cats who do not like.
Once blessed, the animals were taken in procession through the neighborhood of Chueca in the center of the capital.
Alongside the line of faithful came to bless their animals, others flocked to a small window of the church which were distributed rolls, manufactured by a secret recipe in order to remain soft for long.
each believer received three rolls, one of whom, according to tradition must be kept for a whole year almost a coin to make him work and health and ensure the blessings of the saint.
The Feast of San Antonio Abad is a strong tradition in Madrid, where it is celebrated since the early 19th century with the exception of a few brackets.
The ritual is observed throughout Spain, as in Burgos, northern, or the Balearic Islands where the Bishop of Ibiza and Formentera, Vicente Juan Segura, has also blessed the animals. Unfortunately, this blessing is selective, and many sub-proletarians animals do not qualify, especially the poor beasts of millons of concentration camp universe that are battery farms, where animals mean only profit and meat to eat! Sacrificed their souls to peace!
